Apple has been gradually introducing OLED displays into its devices for several years, but in the case of the iMac the change could come much later. According to the latest reports, the company has approached several manufacturers, including China’s BOE, to enquire about new LCD panels. Meanwhile, the launch of the first iMac with an OLED is not expected until between 2029 and 2030.
Is Apple preparing another iMac with an LCD?
As ZDNet Korea reports, Apple has sent suppliers an inquiry about the possibility of developing new LCD panels. This is an early stage of product preparation, in which the manufacturer gathers technical information before setting the final specification. According to Korean sources, devices currently at this stage could reach the market around 2029. Interestingly, the debut of the first iMac with OLED is expected in 2029 to 2030.
This does not mean, however, that Apple has abandoned plans to use that technology. Samsung Display is still developing QD-OLED panels intended for a future iMac. It is therefore possible that the company will opt to sell a cheaper LCD version alongside a more expensive OLED variant.
Why isn't Apple rushing into OLED?
The main problem remains the cost. OLED panels offer deep blacks, high contrast and a wide colour gamut, but their production is more expensive. According to Korean sources, an additional reason for Apple's caution is weaker-than-expected sales of OLED iPad Pros and a rise in memory prices. Moreover, Apple is said to have sent an inquiry to LG Display about LCD panels for a future Studio Display monitor.
For now, however, these are unconfirmed reports. Apple has not confirmed either the release date of an OLED iMac or plans to introduce two versions of the device.
