Samsung Display could end the last quarter of 2026 with significantly weaker financial results. This is due to reduced orders for smartphone components from the company's two largest customers, Apple and Samsung Electronics. The main cause is rising memory prices, which are placing an increasing burden on electronics manufacturers.
Apple and Samsung cut orders
According to South Korea's The Investor, Samsung's mobile division asked suppliers to reduce component shipments in the fourth quarter by 20 to 30% compared with earlier plans. Apple, meanwhile, is said to have cut its October orders for selected components for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max by 15 to 20%.
This could be a major problem for Samsung Display. According to the manufacturer's 2025 financial data, customers associated with Apple and Samsung Electronics together accounted for 62.8% of the manufacturer's revenue. A reduced number of orders for expensive OLED panels could therefore have a significant impact on its profits.
Are rising memory prices to blame for everything?
The main reason for the changes is said to be a sharp rise in DRAM prices. Semiconductor manufacturers are allocating an increasing share of their manufacturing capacity to memory for AI data centres, which pushes up the cost of components used in smartphones.
Samsung Display may also feel pressure to lower OLED panel prices. Phone makers are trying to cut costs by negotiating better terms with suppliers.
For now it is unclear how much impact these changes will have on Samsung Display's results. Reports mainly concern smartphone displays, so they cannot be used to predict price cuts for OLED TVs or monitors.
