XBOX Ally X20 officially presented. The handheld features an OLED screen and new functions.

ASUS has officially expanded its portable gaming device family with the XBOX Ally X20 model. The premiere took place during the 20th anniversary celebrations of the Republic of Gamers brand and brought more changes than a typical anniversary refresh of the equipment. The manufacturer focused on improving the most frequently criticized elements of the previous version of the device. Although there hasn’t been a revolution in terms of performance, users can count on several significant enhancements that affect daily use of the device. ASUS hopes that the new version will help maintain competitiveness against the latest handhelds using Intel and AMD chipsets.

OLED Screen and New Components Aimed at Improving Gaming Comfort

The biggest novelty in the XBOX Ally X20 model is the use of a 7.4-inch OLED display. Compared to the previous IPS panel, gamers will enjoy much better contrast, deeper blacks, and more vibrant colours. ASUS has maintained a Full HD resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz, considering them an optimal compromise between image quality and performance. The manufacturer has fitted the new screen into a housing with almost identical dimensions to the previous model. At the same time, the device's interior has been redesigned to improve airflow. The changes also include a cooling system that is meant to dissipate heat more effectively during long gaming sessions. As a result, the casing temperatures are expected to be lower than in the previous version. Another important upgrade is the new joysticks that utilise TMR technology. These replace the classic analogs that are prone to the drift problem that has been annoying users of many consoles and handhelds for years. However, ASUS has opted not to change the processor. The device still uses the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip, combined with 24 GB of RAM. This means that the greatest benefits will be felt by those who focus on user comfort rather than solely on an increase in frames per second.

The manufacturer has refreshed the appearance and improved the ergonomics of the device

The new XBOX Ally X20 also stands out with its redesigned look. ASUS has used a transparent casing that allows you to see some of the components inside the device. Characteristic elements include the gold accents placed on the buttons and the rear part of the construction. The manufacturer has prepared special markings related to the 20th anniversary of the ROG brand. Even the cooling system elements have been colour-matched to the anniversary style. Additionally, the XBOX logo is now equipped with green backlighting. ASUS has also improved the ergonomics of the device. The front buttons now have a flatter design when pressed, which is intended to facilitate quick thumb movements during gameplay. However, the most interesting change seems to be the new D-pad. Users can switch it between four-way and eight-way modes, which should particularly appeal to fans of fighting games and classic arcade games. The package also includes ROG XREAL R1 glasses. When connected via USB-C, they allow for the display of a virtual screen with a diagonal of up to 171 inches at a resolution of 1080p and a refresh rate of 240 Hz. This solution is mainly aimed at those looking for more immersive experiences while gaming outside the home.

XBOX Ally X20 is not a completely new generation of handheld, but it offers a range of improvements that users of the previous model have been waiting for. The OLED screen, new TMR joysticks, and improved cooling can significantly enhance the comfort of daily use. ASUS has also focused on a more striking appearance and additional ergonomic features. The biggest unknown remains the price, which could turn out to be quite high. However, if the manufacturer prices the device appropriately, the new model could become one of the most interesting offerings in the portable console segment for demanding gamers.
