Until recently, people dreaming of a truly large picture at home most often chose a projector. Today, 98-inch TVs are becoming increasingly accessible, and their specs can be hugely impressive. The TCL C8L shows why traditional projectors are facing ever tougher competition.
Nearly 100 inches and up to 6000 nits
The TCL C8L uses SQD-Mini LED technology and is available in sizes from 55 to 98 inches. The largest model offers 4032 local dimming zones and a declared HDR peak brightness of up to 6000 nits.
Brightness is one of the TV’s biggest advantages over a typical home projector. Projectors often require the room to be properly darkened, while a bright Mini LED TV can handle images much better on a sunny day.
On top of that, there’s a WHVA 2.0 Ultra panel, which the manufacturer says improves viewing angles and reduces reflections.
Home cinema without extra equipment?
The C8L is also equipped with Audio by Bang & Olufsen sound with Dolby Atmos support. That, of course, doesn't mean the built-in speakers will replace a full home cinema system, but they may reduce the need to buy a soundbar straight away.
The TV also offers a native 144 Hz refresh rate, so it will be suitable not only for watching films but also for use with a console or computer.
Should projectors be worried?
A 98-inch TV delivers a picture straight away without having to set up a projector, install a projection screen or black out the room.
Projectors still have one important advantage: they allow for even larger screen diagonals, often exceeding 120 inches.
The TCL C8L therefore points to an interesting direction in the evolution of home entertainment. For people dreaming of a huge screen but not wanting to set up a dedicated home cinema, a Mini LED this large could be an alternative worth considering.
