Classic arcade flight shooters on coin‑op cabinets had a unique vibe that players raised on '90s titles still remember. The creators of Wild Blue Skies decided to tap into those memories and make a game that reminds you why the on-rails shooter was once so popular. Chuhai Labs didn't want a mere trip down memory lane, so they fused the classic arcade formula with modern presentation and mechanics. The developers talked about how they designed the planes, the levels, the controls and the game's distinctive visual style. Wild Blue Skies arrives on 13 August for Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The creators of Wild Blue Skies deliberately used limitations

During the production of Wild Blue Skies the team quickly realised that part of the distinctive feel of classic on-rails shooters came from technological limitations. One of the clearest examples was visibility, which at first was far too large in the game. Players could see very distant parts of the world, causing enemies to appear unnaturally and making it hard to achieve the right pacing. The developers therefore decided to significantly shorten the draw distance, which at first seemed like a risky move. The result, however, was very good, because the player's attention was drawn to events happening directly in front of them. Enemies began to appear more naturally and encounters gained more dynamism. The developers treated this decision as proof that limitations are not always an obstacle when making a game. On the contrary, when used appropriately they can help create a more distinctive experience. Chuhai Labs therefore decided to clearly define the project's core principles and not try to cram in everything modern technology makes possible. This approach was especially important when creating a game inspired by arcade cabinets, where fast-paced action, visual clarity and immediate responsiveness to events matter most. The creators stress that precisely because of the deliberate use of limitations Wild Blue Skies was able to retain the spirit of classic arcade games, rather than become another modern title lacking a clear identity.

Flying the plane should be simple, but allow for masterful play

A great deal of attention during development was also paid to the camera and plane controls. The developers wanted the player to feel in full control of the aircraft as soon as they started playing. At the same time the controls couldn't be too complicated, because Wild Blue Skies is primarily a dynamic arcade game meant to be picked up quickly. Another major challenge was placing the plane on the screen. The aircraft couldn't block the most important action, but it also had to make the player feel like they were actually in the cockpit. The team used techniques such as dithering, which allow the plane to partially fade out of view in certain situations. This keeps the screen readable even during the most intense moments. The control system was designed so the basic mechanics can be learned in a few minutes, while mastering them takes much longer. Dodges can be used not only for defence but also offensively, if the player times the manoeuvre correctly. In missions with greater freedom of flight, the brake lets you perform a 180-degree turn and get behind a pursuing enemy. Each of these mechanics was designed to have its own level of mastery. That way a beginner can simply enjoy flying and shooting, while more experienced players can look for ever more effective ways to beat opponents. So Wild Blue Skies is easy to pick up but harder to master, which is one of the cornerstones of classic arcade games.

Wild Blue Skies is a nod to the classic 90s arcade flight shooters, but the developers didn’t just reproduce the old formula. Chuhai Labs used modern technology while deliberately keeping limitations that help create the right pace and clarity of the gameplay. Intuitive controls, a striking animation-inspired presentation and distinctive characters voiced by well-known voice actors also play a big part. The game is due out on 13 August for Xbox Series X|S and PC, and thanks to Xbox Play Anywhere progress and achievements will be available on both platforms.
