Fans of The Witcher 3 will have another chance to return to the Continent. At Gamescom 2026, around 45 minutes of gameplay from the upcoming expansion Songs of the Past were shown. Geralt will find himself in the entirely new realm of Letten, which at first enchants with tranquil landscapes but soon reveals a darker side. The expansion is being developed by Fool’s Theory, which is collaborating with CD Projekt Red on its production.
Geralt's new story in the land of Letten
The events of Songs of the Past take place in Letten, the homeland of Dandelion. Geralt will be tasked with investigating problems affecting his friend's aristocratic family. At the centre of the story is also a mystery from the past and the enigmatic Garden of Thorns. The creators focus mainly on the characters' stories and their relationships, rather than presenting another threat to the entire world of The Witcher. Letten is intended to be a fully realised open world inspired, among other things, by English and Polish rural areas. Unlike many previously known regions of the Continent, it is not initially a place ravaged by war. Geralt wakes up after a raucous party on a hill and sees a peaceful lake, sailboats, green countryside and mountains in the distance. Fool's Theory has also improved NPC behaviour systems so inhabitants should act more believably and feel like part of a living community. The situation, however, begins to change when Geralt, together with Lilla, Dandelion's cousin, sets out to search. The closer they get to the Garden of Thorns, the more unsettling the surroundings become. Trees grow deformed, the remains of former settlements are overgrown with vegetation, and the light gives way to a darker atmosphere.
New enemies and a chain as a weapon
In Songs of the Past there will also be new enemies. One of them will be Thornblooms, dangerous flowers that cannot move but attack with sudden, violent movements. Another threat comes from the Swarmions, humanoid enemies equipped with shields made of wasps. Geralt will also get a new weapon in the form of a hooked chain. It will act as a ranged weapon and allow him to pull enemies toward him, making melee combat faster and more effective. The new elements will be combined with the familiar mechanics of The Witcher 3, allowing a return to the familiar world while offering a fresh adventure. Songs of the Past is meant to be more than just a way to relive events from the original game. The developers want to expand the characters' stories and introduce a new region with its own mysteries.
The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will take Geralt to Letten, Dandelion's homeland. The new region will start off peaceful and picturesque, but as secrets are uncovered it will reveal a much darker side. In addition, Thornblooms and Swarmions will appear, and Geralt will receive a hooked chain. Songs of the Past will debut in 2027 on Xbox Series X|S. Earlier, on 29 September 2026, a full remaster of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released, and it will be free for owners of the original game.
