After years of waiting, PlayStation players can finally look forward to the return of two of the most highly regarded Call of Duty instalments. Treyarch has confirmed that the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will receive new versions being prepared by the studio Iron Galaxy. The titles, which for years were mainly available on older consoles, are finally set to appear on Sony's modern hardware. For many fans it will be a chance to relive one of the best eras of the series. All signs point to a release as early as July.
Black Ops and Black Ops 2 arrive on newer PlayStation consoles after years
The original Call of Duty: Black Ops debuted in 2010, while Black Ops 2 arrived two years later. Both games quickly grew hugely popular thanks to their expansive single‑player campaigns, polished multiplayer and the iconic Zombies mode. Despite the passage of time, many still consider them among the best entries in the franchise. The problem was that PlayStation players couldn’t run those titles on newer console generations. While Xbox users have long benefitted from backward compatibility, Sony hardware owners were left without a similar option. That is now set to change. According to available information, the games are being prepared as native PlayStation 4 versions that will also run on PlayStation 5 thanks to backward compatibility. For many, this will be the first chance to play these titles on modern hardware. However, this is not a full remaster. The developers are not promising a major overhaul of the graphics or significant gameplay changes. The project's aim is primarily to preserve the original experience. That way players will get essentially the same content they remember from years ago. At the same time, the new release should make the classic entries in the series more easily accessible.
The campaign, multiplayer and the iconic Zombies mode return
The biggest draw for many players may be the return of all the major gameplay modes. Treyarch has confirmed the new versions will include a full single-player campaign, multiplayer and the community-favourite Zombies mode. That means players won't get stripped-down editions, but the complete experience known from the original launches. Multiplayer in particular is generating excitement. There's a lot to suggest that refreshed online servers will go live with the new releases. That could mean more stable connections and better online gameplay than the older versions on previous-generation hardware. For veterans it will be a chance to return to legendary maps and relive Call of Duty's golden years. Younger players will be able to see why Black Ops and Black Ops 2 remain so highly regarded by the community. There are also reports of additional improvements to the game's localisation. The new releases are set to support languages that weren't available in the original versions. However, don't expect major changes to the content itself. This is primarily an effort to preserve the series' classic entries and make them available to a new audience. If all goes to plan, July could prove to be an especially interesting month for Call of Duty fans on PlayStation.
