Double Fine Productions is starting a new chapter, but it wasn’t without some tough decisions. The studio, best known for the Psychonauts series and the recently released game Kiln, has announced staff layoffs. The cuts came shortly after regaining independence from Xbox. The company stresses the move was driven solely by financial reasons. Microsoft confirmed the end of the partnership and said it returned full independence to the studio. The future of new projects remains uncertain.
Double Fine reduces its team after regaining independence
Double Fine Productions announced on Bluesky that it has made 23 redundancies. This represents a reduction of around one quarter of the entire team. The studio said the decision was not easy and was made solely to ensure the company can continue operating. According to the statement, moving to an independent studio model requires scaling the operation to match new financial realities. Double Fine emphasised that all those let go made a significant contribution to the studio and its workplace culture. The company also pledged support for the staff affected by the cuts, while stressing the move was necessary to secure the studio’s continued existence. This is one of the first consequences of regaining full independence after ending its partnership with Xbox. Many fans found the news surprising, especially since the studio recently released a new game. The redundancies, however, highlight the financial challenges even well-regarded developers face. So far there is no word on further organisational changes. The studio says it intends to continue operating as an independent developer.
Microsoft confirms split as future of new games remains uncertain
In a comment given to Kotaku, Microsoft confirmed that Double Fine has officially returned to independent management. The company kept its IP, game catalogue and funds for developing future projects. Xbox wished the studio well and expressed interest in its upcoming titles. At the same time, no information was disclosed about which games Double Fine is currently working on. The lack of such details makes it hard to assess the impact of the layoffs on the schedule of future releases. However, the reduction in staff could lead to delays on projects in progress. For now this is only speculation, as the studio has not provided any specifics. Double Fine has long been recognised for its original and creative work, so many players will be watching its fate closely. Returning to independence gives the studio greater creative freedom but also means it must finance its operations itself. The coming months will show whether the company can find its feet in the new reality. For now the priority remains stabilisation following the completed restructuring.
Double Fine Productions began as an independent studio, but its first move was a workforce reduction affecting around 25 percent of its staff. The creators emphasise that the decision was necessary to ensure the company's financial stability and continued operation.
