The global market for RAM and storage devices has been struggling with rising prices and availability issues for several months. Many companies worry the situation could affect production of new electronic devices. Sony, however, says there is no reason for concern when it comes to the PlayStation 5. The manufacturer says it has secured adequate memory inventory to meet its sales plans for the current financial year. This is especially important ahead of the GTA 6 launch, which could significantly boost interest in consoles. At the same time, the company published its latest financial results and outlined the current state of PlayStation.

Sony does not expect production problems for PlayStation 5

In its latest financial report Sony said it has secured enough RAM modules to produce PlayStation 5 consoles. The company emphasised it does not plan to change its forecasts for hardware sales or profitability for fiscal year 2026. Sony did not disclose whether this means there will be no further price increases for the console in the second half of the year. According to Sony, current stock should also be sufficient for the holiday season and the first months of 2027. This is particularly significant ahead of the November launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, which could substantially boost interest in the PlayStation 5. The company also raised its revenue forecast by 3% and its operating profit forecast by 10%. Sony is therefore counting on improved financial results despite a tougher situation in the components market. Rising memory prices are partly driven by strong demand from the artificial intelligence sector. It is unclear, however, how the situation will look after the current fiscal year ends. Meanwhile, speculation about the next generation of PlayStation consoles is appearing more often. For now Sony is focused on keeping production of the current model steady. The company says gamers should not worry about hardware shortages.

PS5 sales fall, but PlayStation's user base keeps growing

In the past quarter Sony sold 1.38 million PlayStation 5 consoles, compared with 1.56 million a year earlier. The drop in sales followed an earlier $100 price increase for the base model of the console. At the same time, sales of third-party games rose, while titles developed by PlayStation studios sold less well than a year earlier. The company did not disclose current sales figures for Saros or any new data on Ghost of Yotei. Despite this, the number of active PlayStation users rose to 125 million per month, two million more than a year ago. Total PlayStation 5 console sales have reached 95.3 million units. That's still slightly lower than PlayStation 4 at a comparable point in its market presence. Interestingly, the share of digital sales compared with physical game releases dipped slightly in the last quarter. This happened despite earlier announcements about gradually phasing out discs for new games in the coming years. The latest data show PlayStation remains in good financial health despite challenges linked to production costs. The upcoming release of GTA 6 could further boost interest in the console before the end of the year.

Sony reassures it has sufficient RAM supplies to produce the PlayStation 5 and does not expect issues with console availability ahead of the GTA 6 launch. Although hardware sales have dipped slightly, the number of active PlayStation users continues to grow, and the company remains optimistic about its financial performance this year.
