Skatesterre is a new skateboarding game that emphasises a fast pace and the feel of classic arcade titles. The developers at Headup and Goon Squad wanted to bring back the distinctive sense of freedom found in earlier skateboarding games. Professional skater Sterre Meijer played an important role in the production, her style and experience helping to give the game greater authenticity. The creators focused on controls that are easy to master, an expansive combo system and plenty of freedom while riding. Skatesterre is already available on Xbox Series X|S, letting players return to the golden age of virtual skateboarding.
Classic arcade-style skateboarding with a modern twist
From the start, the creators of Skatesterre set out to recreate the freedom and flow of classic skateboarding games. Inspirations included Skate or Die, Dave Mirra, Grind Session and the early Tony Hawk's Pro Skater titles. Unlike more realistic sports simulators, the new title is meant to be easy to pick up and enjoyable from the first minutes. Players should quickly feel like professional skaters, pulling off flashy tricks using an intuitive control system. At the same time, simple fundamentals lead into more demanding gameplay for those looking to improve their scores. An important element is the system for chaining tricks into long combos, which lets you build ever-larger score multipliers. The game lets you perform kickflips, grabs, manuals and grinds, then link them into impressive sequences. Levels are designed to encourage finding your own lines and discovering hidden runs. The team also leveraged the Unreal Engine's capabilities, adding modern solutions that improve the gameplay experience. Above all, everything is designed so that riding is fast, fluid and satisfying. According to the developers, their main goal was to create a game that, after finishing one run, makes you want to start another straight away.
Sterre Meijer gives the game her own style
One of the most important elements of the project is the collaboration with professional skater Sterre Meijer, also known as Surfsterre. The creators felt her approach to skateboarding perfectly suited the character of the production. From the start Sterre influenced the appearance of her character and the way her style would be presented. The team paid close attention to detail, and at one point even decided to rebuild a large part of the character model. This was to ensure the character would be as an authentic depiction of a real-life skater as possible. Her approach to skateboarding also became an inspiration for the game’s overall artistic direction. Skatesterre is meant to be colourful, carefree and a little unconventional, rather than trying to imitate a single image of professional skateboarding. Players can experiment with lines, tricks and their own riding style. In addition to completing missions and chasing high scores, you can also unlock new clothing and equipment for Sterre. Levels offer ramps, rails, gaps and hidden paths that can be used to build increasingly spectacular combos. This is complemented by a dynamic soundtrack inspired by skate punk and skate rock, intended to evoke the atmosphere of classic early-2000s games. Skatesterre is currently available on Xbox Series X|S, and its main goal remains to deliver simple enjoyment from riding, experimenting and continually improving your scores.
Skatesterre is a nod to the golden era of arcade skateboarding games. The game emphasises intuitive controls, spectacular tricks, expanded combos and plenty of freedom while riding. Collaboration with Sterre Meijer is intended to give the game an authentic character and its own identity. The title is already available on Xbox Series X|S.
