Konami and studio Screen Burn Interactive have revealed further details about Silent Hill: Townfall. The upcoming instalment of the cult psychological-horror series promises fresh ideas while keeping the franchise’s distinctive atmosphere. The game is set on a remote Scottish island, where mist and silence play as important a role as the monsters. The creators have also opted for a first-person perspective and new gameplay solutions. An interview also revealed behind-the-scenes details of the game’s development and the development team’s inspirations. The title will arrive on PlayStation 5 at the end of September.
Scotland, an FPP perspective and a new device replacing the iconic radio
Silent Hill: Townfall is being developed by Scottish studio Screen Burn Interactive, known among others for the games Stories Untold and Observation. According to series producer Motoi Okamoto, the choice of that team was related to their experience in creating narrative horror. The developers decided to set the action in Scotland because they are very familiar with the local landscapes and atmosphere. The thick fog common to the region naturally fits the tone of the Silent Hill series. For the first time a full‑fledged instalment in the series will use a first-person perspective (FPP). The developers emphasise, however, that this decision was not inspired by the game Silent Hill: The Short Message, as both projects were developed independently.
An important gameplay element will be the CRTV device, which will replace the distinctive radio familiar from earlier instalments. The new hardware not only allows reception of sounds, but also analyses video signals and can be used during exploration and stealth. According to the creators, the entire game was built around the capabilities offered by the CRTV. Analog technology will also play a significant role, intended to build an atmosphere of uncertainty and unease. The developers say they placed great emphasis on faithfully recreating older devices and the environment. All these elements are meant to strengthen the distinctive atmosphere of psychological horror.
Multiple endings, DualSense and a greater emphasis on atmosphere
Silent Hill: Townfall will offer several different endings determined by the player’s actions throughout the game. The developers stress that the finale won’t be decided by a single choice made at the end. Three main endings can be unlocked on the first playthrough, while a secret ending will appear after completing the game. The title will also make use of the DualSense controller features on PlayStation 5. Adaptive triggers and haptics are designed to convey things like the weight of weapons and the footsteps of approaching enemies. The game will also support gyroscopic controls for aiming and for solving certain puzzles. According to the developers, sound will play an especially important role due to the first-person perspective and the limited field of view. Players will need to listen closely to environmental sounds to detect threats hidden outside their line of sight. The developers also promise different playstyles, letting players choose between combat and stealth. All of these elements aim to ensure Silent Hill: Townfall preserves the atmosphere of the series’ classic entries while introducing new ideas. The game’s release on PlayStation 5 is scheduled for 24 September.
Silent Hill: Townfall is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing entries in the cult series. Its Scottish setting, first-person perspective, new mechanics and expanded use of the DualSense controller's features aim to deliver a fresh yet still faithful psychological horror experience.
