Samsung Display has unveiled a new generation of OLED screens using M16 materials. The panel shown for smartphones can reach up to 10,000 nits of peak brightness. It's an impressive figure, but it applies only to a small portion of the image, not the entire display surface.
As FlatpanelsHD reports, the 10,000-nit figure was achieved in a window covering 1% of the screen, while the declared full-screen brightness is 2,800 nits. The showcased panel has a 6.9-inch diagonal, a 2560 × 1440 pixel resolution and a variable refresh rate from 1 to 165 Hz. In a statement about its collaboration with iQOO, Samsung Display confirms it developed a 2K screen with a 165 Hz refresh rate for the iQOO 16 model. The new design is said to combine high brightness with improved energy efficiency.
The M16 shows how quickly mobile OLEDs are developing, but those specs shouldn't be directly carried over to TVs. Samsung Display uses a different design for large displays: QD-OLED. So for now it's a huge achievement in the smartphone market!
