The display industry is evolving rapidly, and manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve image quality. Samsung Display is among the companies that regularly showcase solutions that chart new directions for the market. This time the company has unveiled two advanced projects that could be used in future generations of devices: a record-bright micro-OLED display designed for XR goggles and a new version of autostereoscopic (glasses-free) 3D technology. Both solutions show what displays of the future could look like.

Micro-OLED with 40,000 nits brightness could change the XR headset market

One of the most interesting introductions from Samsung Display is a new 1.3-inch micro-OLED panel. The panel achieves an impressive brightness of 40,000 nits, which is a huge step forward compared with previous generations. By comparison, many current devices using this technology offer values several times lower. Such high brightness is particularly important for augmented and mixed reality headsets. In these devices a large portion of the light is lost through the optical system, so manufacturers need ever brighter displays. Samsung is relying on RGB micro-OLED technology here, which does not require additional colour filters. That allows the panel to offer higher light efficiency and a longer lifespan.

The manufacturer also highlights benefits in colour reproduction and image sharpness. All of this is crucial for future XR headsets, which must deliver high visual quality while remaining compact. Just two years ago Samsung was showing panels reaching around 5,000 nits. A year later the company revealed a model offering 20,000 nits. Now the bar has been raised even higher. Such rapid progress shows how dynamically the display segment for immersive devices is developing. In future this could translate into significantly better experiences when using augmented and virtual reality.

Glasses-free OLED 3D in new version delivers even better image quality

The second technology presented by Samsung Display is an improved OLED screen that shows three-dimensional images without the need for special glasses. The manufacturer has been developing this solution for several years and apparently has no plans to abandon the direction. The new-generation panel is equipped with user eye-tracking technology, which allows the stereoscopic effect to be better matched to the viewer’s position. As a result, the image is said to look more natural and convincing. Samsung has also increased the resolution of the 3D effect from roughly 2K to 2.4K, which should translate into a sharper picture. At the same time, it has significantly reduced image leakage between the individual depth layers. The manufacturer says the level of so-called crosstalk has been reduced to just one percent. That is a very important change, because this problem has limited the development of glasses-free 3D technology for years. Early viewers who saw previous prototypes pointed out a much better quality than that of current 3D LCD monitors. Samsung has not yet revealed commercialisation plans for the new panel. So it is unclear when the technology might reach laptops, tablets or consumer monitors. The very fact of continued investment, however, shows the company still sees potential in stereoscopic imaging. If development continues at a similar pace, it is possible we will see a return of 3D technology in a much more modern form in the coming years.
