Samsung opens a new OLED factory. This is where OLED displays for Apple's MacBooks will be produced.

Samsung Display has taken another important step in developing OLED displays for laptops. The new A6 factory has started mass production of panels that are expected to go primarily into future Apple MacBooks. This will be a particularly significant moment for the Cupertino company, as it marks the start of the Macs' transition from LCD to OLED. The first MacBook with such a screen could appear as early as late this year or in early 2027.

Samsung begins production of OLED panels specifically for future Apple MacBooks

Samsung Display's new A6 factory started production this summer and, according to available information, was prepared primarily with Apple orders in mind. Samsung won the bid to supply panels for the first OLED MacBook, even though LG Display was also vying for the contract. Apple's first MacBook with an OLED display could be the next-generation MacBook Pro, although there are also reports suggesting the possibility of using the MacBook Ultra name.

Samsung plans to produce around 2 to 2.5 million OLED panels for Apple in 2026. The factory uses Gen 8.7 substrates measuring 2250 × 2620 mm and Fine Metal Mask technology. The company does not intend to stop at the current production level. In the coming years the factory's capacity is expected to be expanded, and Samsung Display also wants to use the additional production space to supply OLED panels to other computer manufacturers.

The panel being prepared for the MacBook looks very promising. According to current reports, Apple plans to use a Tandem OLED paired with an IGZO driver panel. That setup could allow for higher brightness, perfect blacks, a variable refresh rate and better power efficiency. The technology should also improve the display's longevity. Apple may also offer a feature MacBook users have been waiting for for years: a touchscreen. The company already used Tandem OLED in the iPad Pro, where the technology was presented as one of the most advanced display solutions. There are also reports that Apple is considering the BT.2020 colour space, which would offer a wider colour gamut than the currently used DCI-P3, though it’s not yet clear whether that will make it into the first OLED MacBook.

Fabryka A6 jest już trzecim zakładem OLED Gen 8, który rozpoczął masową produkcję w 2026 roku. W czerwcu podobny krok wykonała chińska firma BOE, uruchamiając produkcję w zakładzie B16. Jeszcze w tym roku BOE planuje zwiększyć swoje możliwości produkcyjne, a TCL CSOT może rozpocząć produkcję drukowanych paneli OLED w fabryce T8 przed jej pełnym otwarciem planowanym na 2027 rok. Według danych Counterpoint Research rozwój OLED staje się jednym z najważniejszych kierunków całego rynku wyświetlaczy. Około 73 procent tegorocznych inwestycji w produkcję ekranów ma przypadać na OLED, podczas gdy udział LCD spadł z 32 procent w 2025 roku do około 24 procent w 2026 roku. Wszystko wskazuje więc na to, że OLED będzie w kolejnych latach coraz mocniej wychodził poza smartfony i telewizory, trafiając również do laptopów, tabletów oraz innych urządzeń.

Samsung Display has opened a new A6 factory, which is set to play a key role in producing OLED displays for future MacBooks. The first model could appear as early as late 2026 or early 2027, kickstarting an important shift in Apple’s computer range. The new panels could offer significantly better image quality, higher brightness and greater energy efficiency than current LCD screens. Samsung is also boosting its production capacity as it prepares for further growth in the OLED market for computers.
