Asobo Studio revealed new details about Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy during the latest episode of the official Xbox podcast. The developers talked about Sophia, the combat system, the game's world and the reasons they decided to change the series' established formula so dramatically. The new title will keep the distinctive atmosphere of A Plague Tale, while offering far more action and freedom in combat. The game's release is now very close — Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy arrives for players on 27 August.
Sophia replaces Amicia and the series gets a brand new combat system
After finishing work on A Plague Tale: Requiem, the Asobo Studio team felt Amicia and Hugo’s story was complete. The developers still wanted to expand the A Plague Tale universe, so they began thinking about a protagonist who would allow them to create a more dynamic game. They quickly chose Sophia, who players had already met in Requiem. The team felt her personality and backstory fit the idea of a game focused more heavily on combat. Unlike Amicia, Sophia doesn’t have to avoid enemies above all else, because she can face them directly. The heroine uses two blades, can parry attacks and perform quick dodges. Her movements are intended to be very smooth and responsive, so combat should feel more like faster-paced action games than the series’ previous entries. Sophia can also use a grappling hook, a dagger and items thrown at enemies. The developers wanted to create situations in which a single heroine can take on a larger group of foes. At the same time Sophia isn’t particularly resilient and can be taken down after a few heavy hits. This makes combat risk-based, because the player must react quickly and seize opportunities to counterattack. Asobo Studio drew inspiration in part from Ghost of Tsushima, but during development repeatedly tested its own solutions to adapt them to the feel of Resonance.
Minotaur, Greek mythology and an increasingly darker world
One of the most distinctive features of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is its use of Greek mythology. Promotional materials feature, among other things, the Minotaur and a labyrinth, which have become one of the game's central motifs. Asobo Studio does not intend to faithfully retell the well‑known myths but uses them as a foundation for its own story. The developers wanted to combine real locations and historical events with fantastical elements. As a result, the game's world should feel believable, even though it contains creatures and events taken from legend. An important element will also be Sophia's journey through beautiful Mediterranean locations. In contrast to previous entries, the start of the game is set to be much more colourful and full of light. One location is Venice, which lets the player admire, among other things, the Grand Canal. The creators stress, however, that the beautiful surroundings are primarily meant to create a contrast with what Sophia will discover later. The deeper the heroine delves into the island, the more unsettling the world around her will become. Sound will also play an important role, being directly linked to the meaning of the word Resonance. Asobo Studio says that both the emotional meaning of the title and its link to sound will be important for the story. Players will learn everything at launch on 27 August.
Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set to be the most dynamic entry in the series, as Asobo Studio has opted to replace stealth with a much more developed combat system. Sophia is a completely different heroine to Amicia and has been designed for fast, aggressive encounters where parrying, dodging and the proper use of available tools will be important. At the same time the creators aren’t abandoning the dark atmosphere that defines A Plague Tale, but this time they build it through the contrast between beautiful, sunlit locations and increasingly unsettling events. Greek mythology, the Minotaur, a labyrinth and the mysterious meaning of the title are meant to further set the new story apart. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will debut on 27 August on Xbox Series X|S, PC and on Game Pass.
