Asobo Studio doesn't intend to simply make another game in the style of A Plague Tale: Innocence and A Plague Tale: Requiem. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is set to be much more action-oriented and focused on direct combat, while still retaining the series' distinctive atmosphere. The developers have also chosen a completely new setting and story, so the title won't be a traditional A Plague Tale 3. At the centre of events will be Sophia, a protagonist who will allow the studio to show the series' world from an entirely different perspective.

The developers wanted to move away from the classic A Plague Tale approach and aim for far more dynamic gameplay

After the story presented in A Plague Tale: Requiem concluded, creating a direct sequel wasn't the best solution for Asobo Studio. Hugo's fate led the developers to consider the story from the previous games closed, so instead of making another instalment focused on the same protagonists they decided to look for a new direction. At the same time the team grew very fond of Sophia, who had previously been one of the supporting characters. Her much more active and aggressive personality fit perfectly with the idea of a game in which combat will play a much larger role. Resonance will therefore retain the series' distinctive elements, but in terms of gameplay it is set to be much more dynamic. Players will be able to use dodges, parries and direct attacks, and will also get greater freedom of movement in the world. Sophia can, among other things, climb almost anywhere and use a grappling hook that lets her reach heights of up to 10 metres. That's a big change compared with previous entries, where movement options were much more limited and often depended on specific points prepared by the developers. The change of formula also influenced level design, the script, dialogue and the way events are presented. Asobo wanted to create a story slightly lighter than earlier entries, though it will still contain the series' characteristic dark themes, emotions and difficult choices.

A mysterious island, the legend of the Minotaur and a whole new take on the A Plague Tale world

One of the biggest challenges during development was creating a location that had practically never existed in the series before. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will take players to a mysterious island inspired in part by Minoan culture. Unlike previous games, which drew more heavily on real places and events, this time Asobo had to design an entire civilisation, its environment and the rules that govern it. On the island, Sophia will have to solve puzzles, fight enemies and uncover secrets tied to her past. An important part of the story remains the Macula, the mysterious plague familiar to fans of earlier entries, although here it’s presented in a new form. The developers wanted to keep its significance to the universe while showing it from a different angle. The game will also include fragments of ancient events that will intertwine with Sophia’s story. Added to that are light-based puzzles, exploration, chases and enemies that will force players to stay on the move. Despite numerous changes, Asobo doesn’t intend to abandon the series’ visual identity. You’ll still see the distinctive, painterly landscapes, thick fog and striking lighting that have become some of A Plague Tale’s most recognisable features. Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy will launch 27 August 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. With Xbox Play Anywhere, a single purchase lets you play on both console and PC.

Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is poised to be a bold step in a new direction for the series. Asobo Studio this time focuses on dynamic combat, more freedom to explore and an entirely new heroine, while retaining the signature atmosphere and narrative elements of A Plague Tale. Sophia will find herself on a mysterious island inspired by Minoan culture, where she must uncover the secrets of her past and confront the mystery of the Macula. The game launches on 27 August 2026 for Xbox Series X/S and PC, and will be available on Xbox Game Pass at launch.
