Razer has unveiled the Prio controller designed for gaming on smartphones. The device connects directly to the phone via USB-C and attaches to both sides. The biggest advantage of the gamepad is its folding design, which means when folded it takes up roughly the same space as a credit card. Despite its compact size, Razer has not abandoned the classic layout of buttons and analog sticks. The controller is already available for $99.99.
Razer Prio folds down to credit card size
Razer Prio was designed mainly for people who want a smartphone controller with them at all times. During play it unfolds into two sections that sit on either side of the smartphone. After you finish gaming both parts can be folded, significantly reducing the space the device takes up. The manufacturer states that when folded Prio has a footprint similar to a credit card. Its dimensions are only about 10 to 15 mm larger in width and height than a standard card. Bear in mind, though, that the controller is naturally much thicker. Because of that the design should be easier to store than classic non-folding mobile controllers. Razer lists the device weight as 101 grams. In terms of operation, Prio does not differ greatly from other controllers made for smartphones. The phone sits between the controller halves and the connection is via USB-C. This avoids the need for an extra cable while playing. So the main difference is the physical design itself, which is intended to make the controller easier to transport. That's especially important for people who don't want to carry a large gamepad while travelling.
Classic buttons and analogue sticks on board
Despite its compact design, the Razer Prio offers the control set found on larger controllers. The housing includes low-profile analogue sticks, a D-Pad and ABXY buttons. It also has dual bumpers and triggers, so you get the full basic layout for modern games. Razer fitted the analogue sticks with non-contact sensors. According to the manufacturer, this helps avoid stick drift. The controller is designed to work with both Android smartphones and iPhones. The Prio uses a USB-C connection, so compatibility also depends on whether your phone has the right port. The design aims to combine travel-friendly compactness with a button layout similar to full-size controllers. The device is priced at $99.99. That's exactly the same as the Razer Kishi V3. Prio is already available from Razer's online store and via Amazon. So the maker began selling the device straight after unveiling it.
