Sony will end the era of physical game releases on its consoles. The company has officially confirmed that from 2028 all new titles will be sold exclusively in digital form. That means boxed versions of new PlayStation games will become a thing of the past. The decision fits with a trend over the past few years away from optical media in favour of digital distribution. For many players, this will be one of the biggest changes since the launch of the original PlayStation.
Sony goes fully digital for game distribution
Sony has announced that from January 2028 all new games released for PlayStation consoles will be available only in digital form. This marks the end of production of physical discs for new titles. The company emphasises the decision will not affect games released before that date. Existing titles will still be available on disc and remain on sale. The change will apply only to new releases that appear after January 2028. Sony explains the move by the growing popularity of digital purchases and shifting player preferences. The company's data show the share of digital sales rising steadily year on year. In 2024 the digital-to-physical sales ratio was 76 to 24 percent. A year later it was 78 to 22 percent. In the first quarter of 2026 as many as 85 percent of all games sold were bought digitally. Sony believes this trend will only strengthen in the coming years. The maker says it will continue to invest in developing the PlayStation Store and services related to digital distribution. For the gaming market this means the definitive end of one of the most important eras in console history.
PlayStation 6 without a disc drive? All signs point to it
Although Sony has not yet confirmed the specifications of the next-generation console, its latest decision strongly suggests that PlayStation 6 may debut without an optical drive. Dropping discs would allow the manufacturer to cut production costs and simplify the device's design. In recent months there has also been growing talk of rising prices for RAM and SSDs, which have a significant impact on the cost of new devices. That could be one reason Sony is accelerating the move to full digitisation. For some players this will be a more convenient solution, since games can be downloaded directly from the PlayStation Store. However, there will still be people who value collecting physical boxed releases and reselling completed titles. Sony's decision will probably also affect the whole games market and competitors' strategies. More and more manufacturers already offer consoles without disc drives. The coming years could therefore completely change how games are bought and stored. If the current trend continues, physical releases will become part of history, much like cassette tapes or music CDs before them. 2028 could prove to be the start of a new era of digital distribution on consoles.
