Sony, as usual, rounded up the past month by publishing a list of the most downloaded games on the PlayStation Store. The ranking covers titles for PS5, PS4, PS VR2 and free-to-play games. June brought a few surprises, and topping the list was a horror inspired by the online phenomenon Backrooms. That game proved more popular than many high-profile releases. It shows players are increasingly willing to try less obvious titles.
Escape the Backrooms took the PlayStation Store by storm
The biggest winner in June was Escape the Backrooms, which claimed the top spot in downloads on PlayStation 5 both in Europe and in the United States and Canada. Close behind were titles such as 007 First Light, EA Sports FC 26, UFC 6 and NBA 2K26. The European chart also featured strong showings from Grand Theft Auto V, Gothic 1 Remake, Resident Evil 4 and Forza Horizon 5. Sony notes that the Backrooms motif dominated not only traditional games but also releases for PlayStation VR2. Among the most popular VR titles were, for example, Escape – Backrooms Horror VR and other games inspired by that atmosphere. June’s results show that players are keen on horror and co-op experiences, while well-known sports franchises and major AAA series are also performing very well. The ranking confirms that genre diversity remains one of the PlayStation Store’s greatest strengths. Sony publishes these lists every month, showing genuine player interest in individual releases. That makes it easy to see which games are most popular around the world.
Fortnite still strong, but the competition isn't letting up
Sony also published charts for PlayStation 4 and free-to-play games. On the older console the best-selling title was Red Dead Redemption 2, ahead of Gang Beasts, Batman: Arkham Knight and Star Wars Battlefront II. In the free-to-play category, Fortnite topped the chart in North America, while Goals took first place in Europe. Also in the top spots were Roblox, Rocket League, Call of Duty: Warzone, eFootball and Marvel Rivals. In the PlayStation VR2 ranking, the most downloaded game was I Am Cat. Also high on the list were Beat Saber, Job Simulator, Metro Awakening and Arizona Sunshine VR 2. The June chart shows that players are still keen to return to both big hits from years past and new releases. At the same time, free games remain popular and continue to be a key part of the PlayStation ecosystem. Sony will publish the next chart after the end of July.
