Mini LED technology may soon lose significant popularity in laptops. According to the latest forecasts from Counterpoint Research, shipments of these panels are expected to fall by as much as 75% over two years. At the same time, OLED is set to become increasingly important, and Apple also plans to adopt it.
OLED is displacing Mini LED in laptops
Analysts at Counterpoint Research predict global shipments of Mini LED panels for laptops will fall by 38% in 2026 and then by a further 60% in 2027. That means that in two years their number could be just one quarter of the 2025 level.
The picture for OLED is completely different. Shipments of those panels are expected to rise by 50% in 2026 and a further 24% in 2027. Meanwhile, the overall laptop display market is forecast to shrink by about 3% this year.
Apple could speed up the shift
One of the main reasons for the growing popularity of OLEDs is Apple's planned move to the technology in the next-generation MacBook Pro models. According to reports, Samsung Display is set to handle the initial panel deliveries, having launched a new 8.6-generation OLED production line.
OLED primarily offers perfect black, high contrast and the ability to build thinner screens without separate backlighting. Increasingly efficient production methods are also expected to further reduce panel costs.
However, this does not spell the end for Mini LED. Those forecasts relate to the laptop market, while Mini LED remains an important alternative to OLED in TVs.
