MicroLED has long been recognised as one of the most promising display technologies. But right now few people can afford to pay hundreds of thousands of zlotys for a TV. Intel is reportedly stepping in to help, and its collaboration with AUO could shake things up.
Intel to work with a screen manufacturer
According to Taiwanese reports, Intel is in talks with AUO, one of the major panel makers. The companies are said to be discussing a new method of producing and bonding electronic circuits to a microLED substrate. Intel already holds a patent for a technology called "IC Package with Micro LEDs". It involves placing part of an integrated circuit directly into a glass substrate. This approach could, among other things, simplify panel construction and reduce manufacturing costs. What's interesting is that the technology could be used not only in TVs and monitors but also more widely in electronics.
MicroLED has plenty of advantages
The technology is similar to OLED in some respects. Each pixel can emit light independently. That means very high contrast and excellent control over lighting. MicroLED, however, has the edge in several important areas. Panels can reach very high brightness levels. They're also less prone to burn-in than OLEDs. On top of that, they offer fast response times. The problem so far has been price. Currently, large MicroLED TVs can cost even hundreds of thousands of Polish zloty.
Will prices fall?
A collaboration between Intel and AUO could help solve one of the biggest problems facing this technology. So far there is no official confirmation that the two companies have entered into a partnership. It's also unclear when any potential solutions would enter mass production. For now, affordable microLEDs remain a prospect for the future. But who knows, we might yet see a breakthrough.
