OLED technology has long been regarded as the benchmark for picture quality, yet its production still remains significantly more expensive than LCD or miniLED TVs. LG Display wants to change that by unveiling a new generation of panels designed to lower manufacturing costs without compromising quality. What's more, the manufacturer says the new solution delivers even better colour reproduction and higher energy efficiency, which could pave the way for cheaper OLED TVs in the coming years.
New OLED panel uses only two layers
The new design developed by LG Display is based on a two-layer OLED architecture, while currently used WOLED panels rely on three layers, and the most expensive Tandem WOLED models even four. Reducing the number of layers significantly simplifies the manufacturing process, which directly lowers panel production costs. The manufacturer emphasises that this does not mean a deterioration in picture quality. On the contrary, the new panel is said to provide comparable or even greater brightness while offering better energy efficiency. LG Display also promises wider viewing angles, so the image should retain high quality regardless of where you sit in front of the television. One of the most important changes is the use of a new blue-emitting material and the splitting of the former yellow-green layer into separate red and green layers. The company says this design improves not only panel performance but also colour reproduction. It’s another step in the development of OLED technology, which should compete more effectively with increasingly capable mini-LED televisions. Everything indicates the new architecture will form the basis of the next generation of more affordable screens.
Better colours to help OLEDs in their fight against miniLED
According to data presented by LG Display, the new panel achieves 82.5% coverage of the BT.2020 colour space, while current three-layer WOLED panels offer around 76.5%. That means noticeably better colour reproduction, which should be particularly visible when watching HDR films and modern games. The manufacturer also reports a slightly higher brightness in calibrated picture modes with a colour temperature of 6500 K. At higher colour temperatures brightness is expected to be a little lower, but the differences should not be significant in everyday use. The new panels are set to appear primarily in mid-range OLED televisions and monitors, where they will compete with miniLED designs. LG Display has not yet given a start date for mass production or delivery dates for its partners. Manufacturers such as LG Electronics, Samsung, Sony, Philips, Panasonic, Asus, MSI and Dell may benefit from the new panels in the future. Market analysts believe the new technology will allow LG Display to maintain a strong position in the premium segment while also competing more effectively in more affordable TV and monitor models. This could mean greater availability of OLED screens to a wider range of customers.
The new two-layer OLED panel from LG Display looks set to be an important step in the development of the technology.
