Is GTA 6 best played on PS5? Rockstar and Sony launch a joint campaign

Calendar 7/15/2026

The release of GTA 6 is fast approaching, and Sony and Rockstar Games have launched an unusual marketing campaign. Both companies are claiming the upcoming title "runs best on PS5", even though it is not a console exclusive. The message has sparked debate among players, especially since the Xbox Series X has very similar computational power to Sony's console.

Rockstar backs PlayStation ahead of GTA 6 release

The slogan "GTA 6 plays best on PS5" has appeared on Rockstar Games' official site, the studio's social media and PlayStation channels. Sony stresses that players will get extra experiences thanks to the DualSense controller, whose adaptive triggers and haptic vibrations are said to better convey the action during gameplay. The company also points to the controller's built‑in speaker, which is intended to boost immersion during certain events. A key part of the promotion is also Tempest 3D Audio technology, responsible for spatial sound, and the PS5's fast SSD, which shortens loading times. Sony argues that this will make the world of Leonida more realistic and smoother to explore. In practice, the campaign aims to encourage players to choose PlayStation as the platform to play one of the most important titles of this generation. It is worth emphasising, however, that this is not an exclusivity deal, and GTA 6 will also arrive on Xbox Series X and Series S. The joint promotion could nonetheless further weaken Xbox's position, which has been grappling with problems and restructuring for months.

Will the PS5 really offer a better version of the game?

Despite marketing assurances, it's hard to expect major differences between the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. Both consoles offer very similar performance, so experts predict almost identical graphics and visual effects. The Xbox also supports Dolby Atmos, so some audio features won't be exclusive to the PS5. Sony's biggest advantage remains the capabilities of the DualSense controller, which Microsoft's controller does not offer. According to analysts at Digital Foundry, GTA 6 will likely run at 30 frames per second (fps) on both PS5 and Xbox Series X. The reason is likely the limited CPU performance of the current-generation consoles, not the GPUs. It's possible the PS5 Pro will get a special 40 fps mode for 4K 120 Hz TVs with HDMI 2.1, but Rockstar has not confirmed this yet. We'll probably learn more technical details closer to the game's release, scheduled for 19 November 2026.

Rockstar and Sony have launched a major campaign promoting GTA 6 on PlayStation 5, highlighting the console and the DualSense controller. However, all signs indicate that differences in graphics quality between the PS5 and Xbox Series X will be minimal. Final comparisons won’t be possible until after the game’s release.
