Google TV will get Shorts on the home screen. Vertical videos are coming to TVs.

Calendar 5/11/2026

Google TV is preparing for another major interface change. This summer, vertical YouTube Shorts videos will start appearing on the platform's main screen. Google wants to promote short content even more on TVs, even though the vertical video format is mainly associated with smartphones.

Vertical Shorts will go straight to the TV's home screen

Until now, Google TV recommendations have mainly focused on movies, series, and TV shows. Now the company plans to expand the home screen to include short vertical video content. Initially, the feature will appear this summer in the United States and include YouTube Shorts, but Google does not rule out future integration with TikTok or Instagram. This is another step showing that vertical content is increasingly entering the world of televisions. In recent years, similar moves have been made by, among others, Samsung, Netflix, and Disney+, and some manufacturers have even tried to promote special vertical TVs for watching mobile content.

Google also adds new AI features to Google TV

Together with Shorts, Google has also announced more AI features for Google TV. The platform will include features like image and video generation using the Nano Banana and Veo models. There will also be new integration capabilities with Google Photos. Users will be able to use the "Remix" feature, which will allow them to change the style of photos or backgrounds using voice commands. Google will also add voice search for photos and a Dynamic Slideshow feature, which will enable albums from Google Photos to function as a screensaver for the TV. Some of the new options will require devices that support Gemini AI.

Google TV is increasingly transforming into a platform focused not only on movies and series but also on short vertical content and AI features. YouTube Shorts on the TV's home screen shows that the mobile viewing style is starting to seep into the world of larger screens.
