The streaming market is increasingly heading towards the consolidation of services. Disney has been developing integration between Disney+ and Hulu for some time now, and the latest information suggests that the process may be entering a decisive phase. According to leaks, the company is working on an internal project called Gemini, aimed at transferring more functions and content from Hulu to Disney+. Although there are no official plans to close the Hulu app, the company's actions indicate a gradual preparation for users to utilise a single platform. The changes could be completed before the end of 2026. For many subscribers, this would mean more convenient access to the entire library in one place.
Disney increasingly integrates Hulu with Disney+
The first steps in this direction were taken in 2023 when Disney launched a special section of Hulu within Disney+ for selected subscribers. Recently, the company also allowed some users to merge profiles from both services. This enables the transfer of viewing history, favourite lists, and recommendations between platforms. According to leaks, more Hulu features are to be gradually integrated with Disney+ so that users will need to use a separate app less frequently. The goal is to create a more cohesive and convenient environment for viewers.
The Future of Hulu is in Question
Internal documents obtained by the media suggest that the technical infrastructure of Hulu may be switched off in the future after the user migration is complete. Sources connected to Disney assert that the development of a standalone app has been severely restricted, with new resources primarily directed towards Disney+. The company officially denies plans to phase out Hulu; however, experts point out that maintaining two nearly identical platforms is becoming increasingly unviable. As a result, Disney may ultimately choose to go with one app serving the entire streaming offering of the corporation.
Although Hulu still operates as a separate service, everything indicates that Disney is laying the groundwork for further integration with Disney+. If the plans are realised, users may receive a single platform in the future that combines content from both services without the need to switch between apps.
