Disney+ is starting to lose some features in Europe. In Germany and the Netherlands, users can no longer cast movies and TV shows to their TV via Google Cast, and the restriction also affects AirPlay. The reason is another patent dispute Disney lost against InterDigital.
The changes result from a Unified Patent Court ruling on 2 September 2026. The court found that Disney infringed a patent related to transferring multimedia content between devices. In practice, this means that users in Germany and the Netherlands can no longer cast video from a smartphone or tablet to a TV from the Disney+ app via Chromecast or AirPlay. Importantly, the restriction applies only to the Disney+ app itself, not to those features in the TV; other apps can still work normally.
At the moment, Poland is not affected by any block, and the native Disney+ app on Smart TVs, Apple TV, Google TV and consoles still works as usual. However, it's worth keeping an eye on the situation, because Disney's dispute with InterDigital has been going on for some time and has previously involved technologies related to HDR and video encoding. If further court rulings cover additional countries, similar restrictions could also appear across other European markets.
