The loudest departure in the history of Rockstar Games. When Dan Houser left Rockstar in 2020, the industry was in shock. The co-creator of GTA and Red Dead left suddenly, without a clear explanation. Now new information is coming to light, suggesting that the decision was not as "peaceful" as the studio implied.
Tez2 is voicing his opinion again
Houser has been increasingly commenting on old projects in recent months – from the cancelled "Agent" to the unfulfilled "Bully 2". This time, however, it’s not him causing the stir, but Tez2. He is one of the most credible figures in the GTA community, known for his accurate leaks regarding Rockstar's inner workings. It was he who revealed new details in response to a discussion about the reasons for Houser's departure on GTAForums.
The Houser brothers' conflict was meant to be key
According to Tez2, citing two former Rockstar employees: “He left due to a misunderstanding with his brother regarding the direction of the company. If it were about trade unions or working conditions, he would have left back in 2018 as a form of apology for the comment quoted by Schreier.” So it’s not a single scandal, not crunch, not pressure — just a deep difference in vision of what Rockstar should be in the future.
What if?
The studio never provided details about the departure of the co-founder, but these reports reignite the imagination.
What would the GTA series look like today if the two brothers were still pulling the company in the same direction?
We may never know for sure, but one thing is certain – the topic of Dan Houser's departure has just made a comeback.
