Apple opts for performance rather than revolution
At WWDC 2026 Apple spent little time on tvOS 27, but the new update brings a number of practical improvements for Apple TV 4K users. This time the company focused primarily on system speed rather than the major interface overhaul seen a year earlier. The biggest change is up to 30 per cent faster app launches. Apple has also improved the Control Centre and sped up AirPlay connections to Apple TV and HomePod speakers. What's new also includes smart app downloads, reduced app sizes thanks to local language packs, and expanded settings for game controllers. Also notable is the redesigned Podcasts app, which now supports both audio and video podcasts. Apple has also released a new Apple TV Remote app for iPhones, iPads and Apple Watch.
Hi-Res Lossless, Apple Music and improved HomeKit
One of the most important additions for music fans is support for Hi-Res Lossless audio at up to 24-bit/192 kHz in Apple Music on Apple TV. The system also gained AutoMix and Crossfade features, which allow smooth transitions between tracks. Apple has also expanded smart home capabilities. The Home app now supports 4K camera recordings, and analysis of HomeKit Secure Video footage is performed locally using Private Cloud Compute technology. tvOS 27 also supports the Thread 1.4 standard, improving compatibility with smart home devices. The update also introduces new accessibility features, including the ability to adjust text size and automatic transcription of audio into English captions on the third‑generation Apple TV 4K. The public tvOS 27 beta is already available for users of compatible Apple TV 4K models, while the final release will be rolled out in autumn alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27 and macOS 27.
tvOS 27 doesn't bring a visual revolution, but focuses on improving performance and the everyday comfort of using Apple TV. Faster system performance, support for Hi-Res Lossless, new Apple Music features and HomeKit improvements make this one of the most practical tvOS updates in recent years.
