Rebellion has released a new trailer for Alien Deathstorm, its upcoming sci-fi shooter with horror elements. The game takes the player to an off-world mining colony that has suddenly lost contact. The protagonist isn't a trained soldier but an engineer sent on a rescue mission. On arrival it turns out the colony is being ravaged by a massive storm, and it's also been overrun by particularly dangerous creatures. The new footage shows, among other things, a segment of the reactor mission, various enemy types and the available weapons.
The biggest threats will be a massive storm and a damaged reactor
One of the key elements of the new trailer is the titular mega-storm, which quite literally rips the planet apart. The cataclysm is not just for show, as it represents a constant and growing danger to the player. The ruined environment makes getting around difficult and forces the player to move cautiously through the colony. On the surface, the situation is made worse by numerous alien creatures hunting the survivors. It might seem that sheltering inside buildings would be safer. The problem is that, inside enclosed spaces, the aliens can become an even greater threat. The trailer shows a section of a mission called The Reactor, which takes place roughly halfway through the game. The player's task will be to reach the damaged fission reactor and get it working again. That requires fixing several faults and visiting, among other places, an underground substation and the reactor stack. Both locations are said to be full of hazards, difficult terrain and ambushes. The objective system is also handled interestingly, as information is presented via the digital assistant Squire. The player must analyse the situation on their own and decide how to tackle each challenge.
Aliens hunt in groups, and the player must survive using weapons and tools
In Alien Deathstorm the enemies are meant to be much more unpredictable than the typical foes in classic shooters. The aliens are intelligent, hunt in groups and can use the environment during attacks. Their behaviour is designed to change dynamically depending on the situation and the player's actions. This means subsequent runs of the same sections can play out differently. The developers also emphasise that the protagonist is not a super-soldier but an engineer with only basic combat training. Combat is therefore intended to be primarily a desperate attempt to survive. At Gamescom four types of alien were shown: Soldiers, Scuttlers, Blister Scuttlers and Scuttler Swarms. Rebellion says more enemy types will be revealed in the future. The player will have access to, among other things, a pistol, a submachine gun and a shotgun. While exploring you can find blueprints that unlock weapon upgrades such as sights, stocks, barrels and magazines. Interestingly, the parts you obtain can then be fabricated using a 3D printer and fitted to your kit. The engineer will also have their signature hammer, which will be used both for repairs and for melee. It will be especially useful in encounters with flying Scuttlers. In addition to weapons, the player will also use a Geiger counter, grenades, flares and healing syringes.
Alien Deathstorm promises to be an intense blend of sci‑fi shooter, survival and horror. A massive storm, a ruined colony and aliens that hunt in packs are set to keep exploration constantly tense for the player. Rebellion is also emphasising dynamic enemy behaviour and the limited capabilities of the main character. The game will launch in spring 2027 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, and will be available on Game Pass from day one.
