YouTube cuts features for users with AdBlock? Comments and video descriptions are disappearing.

Calendar 2/18/2026

YouTube users have begun to notice strange behavior of the service while using browser ad blockers. In many cases, a message appears under the videos stating that comments are disabled even though discussions are actually ongoing. Sometimes, video descriptions that contain additional information, links, or sources also disappear. Interestingly, the problem often resolves itself after refreshing the page or disabling the ad-blocking extension. This phenomenon is reported by users of various browsers and devices. More and more people are starting to suspect that this is not a coincidence.

Comments as a "pressure tool"?

The comment section is, for many viewers, a key element of YouTube—a place for discussion, exchange of opinions, and supplementation of video content. If the platform indeed restricts access to it for users with active ad blockers, it could be a form of indirect pressure to give up on blocking ads or switch to YouTube Premium. This is not the first time that YouTube is testing methods to combat ad-blocking extensions. In the past, there have been warning messages, slow loading of videos, and even temporary playback blocks. However, limiting the visibility of comments would be a new, more subtle way of "encouraging" watching ads.

Technical Problem or Deliberate Test?

At this moment, YouTube has not released an official statement on the matter. Therefore, it is unclear whether we are dealing with a bug after the recent changes to the interface or a controlled experiment. However, the scale of reports suggests that the situation does not pertain to isolated cases. If the phenomenon turns out to be part of an anti-adblock strategy, it could trigger another wave of dissatisfaction. For creators, this also poses a potential problem as reduced visibility of comments means a decline in interactions and community engagement.

YouTube has been trying for years to limit the use of ad blockers, but disappearing comments and descriptions of videos is a move that strikes directly at the platform's core functions. For now, it is unclear whether this is a mistake or a planned strategy. One thing is certain: the tension between users and the service's advertising model continues to rise.
