Sony has patented a technology that could significantly improve gameplay smoothness on future PlayStation consoles. The solution is similar to NVIDIA's DLSS Frame Generation, but has one interesting difference: it also uses controller input to predict player movements and generate additional frames.

The patent titled "Generation Super Sampling" describes a system that uses artificial intelligence to generate additional frames between those rendered by the console. This would increase on-screen smoothness without having to render every frame using traditional methods.

Will the console predict what you'll do?

The most interesting part of the solution is analyzing controller signals, such as button presses and analog stick movements. Thanks to that, the system could predict a player's future actions and generate the corresponding frames, potentially reducing the latency associated with frame generation. However, it's unclear whether the technology will actually make it into PlayStation 6. For now it's only a patent, and Sony has not confirmed its implementation or released any test results.

If the solution proves effective in practice, future consoles could deliver smoother gameplay without a similarly large increase in processing power requirements.
