Steam suffered a serious blunder that caused information about achievements for dozens of unannounced games to appear online. The data was detected by services that track achievements, including SteamDB and Exophase. Among the projects were mysterious games tied to Avengers, Dune, Sonic and Sea of Thieves. The list is much longer and also includes many titles that had not been officially announced before. Valve has not yet disclosed details about the cause of the problem.
Steam API bug opened access to private data
The issue was noticed when Exophase and SteamDB started logging achievements tied to many unreleased games. Exophase owner Mike Bendel confirmed on the ResetEra forum that the situation appears to be an error on Valve's side. According to him, some games with achievements that should have been hidden were, for a time, available through the Steam API. This allowed the services' automated tracking systems to scan the data and add it to their databases. Particularly interesting were appearances of titles that did not yet have a publicly visible name. In those cases Exophase simply assigned them their AppID number. The leak did not affect just a few random apps but covered a very large group of projects still before official presentation. The mere existence of achievements does not always mean a game is close to release. Developers can prepare such elements much earlier, before they decide to officially reveal the project. The list includes both previously announced productions and titles that players learned about only because of this situation. Known games on the list included Persona 6, Kingdom Hearts IV, Gears of War: E-Day, Judas and Silent Hill: Townfall. Also appearing were Fate/Extra Record, Gundam Rogue Orbit and Stupid Never Dies, titles that have already been officially confirmed. However, the Steam API should not expose such information before release, so the whole situation looks like a configuration or security error on Valve's side.
Avengers, Dune and Sonic among the most mysterious projects
The most interest was generated by listings related to games that have not yet been officially announced. The list included unannounced projects for Avengers, Dune, Sea of Thieves, Sonic and Stellaris. In the case of Avengers, there was an unconfirmed suggestion that it might be a long-abandoned THQ project being revived. However, this information comes from a leaker and should be treated only as a rumor. The leak also points to an unannounced game related to Balatro, Brawl Stars, Candy Crush and Slime Rancher. Players also found listings suggesting a new title in The Walking Dead universe and a project tied to Shrek. The list also included mysterious titles connected to Twin Peaks, Heroes of Newerth and Toem. Among the more concrete names were ACE COMBAT 8, Attack on Titan 3, DRAGON BALL XENOVERSE 3, Deus Ex Remaster and Minecraft Dungeons 2. There was also Persona 4 Revival, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, Turok Origins and Tropico 7. An interesting case is Squadron 42, whose presence on Steam confirms that the single-player campaign linked to Star Citizen will also come to that platform. The release of Squadron 42 was recently delayed to the second quarter of 2027. Interestingly, GTA 6 did not appear on the leaked list, so the leak does not confirm rumors of an earlier PC launch for Rockstar's game.
