Sony is not slowing down in expanding the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 Pro. The latest system software beta shows the company wants to make the most of PSSR 2.0 technology, its own AI-based image upscaling system. The new update will cause the relevant option to be enabled automatically, so players should get better image quality even in titles that haven’t yet been updated by developers.
The update will automatically enable enhanced image upscaling
According to information from the beta of the new PlayStation 5 software, the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature will now be enabled by default after installing the update. That means PS5 Pro users won't have to enable that option themselves in the console settings. Sony aims to ensure in this way that all compatible games take advantage of the latest PSSR 2.0 improvements. The feature should also work in titles that use an older version of the image scaling system. This should let games deliver a sharper, more detailed image without developers having to prepare separate updates. That's especially important for releases that haven't received support for the newer PSSR version since launch. Sony says the solution will improve displayed image quality while maintaining the console's high performance. The maker previously hinted that the switch controlling enhanced scaling would eventually be removed once newer PSSR versions become standard. So the current update is another step in the transition to the newer technology. Everything indicates PS5 Pro users will see an image quality improvement with virtually no extra steps required.
Sony is developing PSSR 2.0, but the update doesn't introduce many other changes
The PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution technology, or PSSR, is one of the key features that sets the PS5 Pro apart. The initial version didn't always perform perfectly, particularly in some games using Unreal Engine 5, which experienced lighting rendering issues. The newer PSSR 2.0 is meant to eliminate those imperfections and deliver a clearer image in a larger number of titles. The latest system beta focuses specifically on that element and offers few additional new features. Sony only mentions system stability fixes and minor changes to an option for disabling the Bluetooth module in certain regions. Since this is currently a beta, more additions could still appear before the official release. The company also hasn't given a date for making the update available to all console users. Players participating in the beta program are the first to test new solutions and provide feedback before the final release. All signs point to the main change being the automatic use of the improved PSSR 2.0 across all supported games.
The new PS5 Pro update is set to make the PSSR 2.0 technology much more widely used than before. Automatically enabling the Enhance PSSR Image Quality feature will allow image quality to be improved even in older games that support the earlier version of the upscaling system. Although the beta doesn't bring many other changes, for PS5 Pro owners it could prove to be one of the more important updates related to graphics quality.
