The display industry is evolving at lightning speed, and manufacturers are constantly looking for ways to improve image quality. Samsung Display is one of the companies that regularly unveils solutions that set new directions for the market. This time the company has showcased two advanced projects that could be used in future generations of devices: a record-bright micro-OLED display for XR headsets and a new version of glasses-free 3D imaging technology. Both solutions show what displays of the future might look like.
40,000-nit micro-OLED could change the XR headset market
One of the most interesting innovations shown by Samsung Display is a new 1.3-inch micro-OLED panel. The display reaches an impressive brightness of 40,000 nits, which is a huge step forward compared with previous generations. For comparison, many current devices using this technology offer values several times lower. Such high brightness is especially important for augmented and mixed reality headsets. In these devices a large portion of light is lost through the optical system, so manufacturers need increasingly bright displays. Samsung is focusing on RGB micro-OLED technology, which does not require additional color filters. That allows the panel to offer higher luminous efficiency and better longevity.
The manufacturer also emphasizes benefits in color reproduction and image sharpness. All of this matters greatly for future XR headsets, which must deliver high visual quality while remaining compact. Just two years ago Samsung demonstrated panels reaching about 5,000 nits. A year later the company showed a model offering 20,000 nits. Now the bar has been raised even higher. Such rapid progress shows how dynamically the display segment for immersive devices is developing. In the future this could translate into significantly better experiences when using augmented and virtual reality.
Glasses-free 3D OLED in a new version delivers even better image quality
The second technology presented by Samsung Display is an improved OLED screen that shows three-dimensional images without the need for special glasses. The manufacturer has been developing this solution for several years and apparently does not intend to abandon the approach. The new-generation panel is equipped with eye-tracking technology that better adapts the 3D effect to the viewer’s position. As a result, the image should look more natural and convincing. Samsung also increased the resolution of the 3D effect from about 2K to 2.4K, which should translate into a sharper picture. At the same time, it managed to significantly reduce the bleeding of images between individual depth layers. The manufacturer claims that the level of so-called crosstalk has been lowered to just one percent. This is a very important change, because that problem has limited the development of glasses-free 3D for years. The first people who had the chance to see earlier prototypes noted a much better quality than that of currently available 3D LCD monitors. Samsung has not yet revealed plans to commercialize the new panel. It is therefore unknown when the technology might reach laptops, tablets or consumer monitors. The very fact of continued investment shows, however, that the company still sees potential in three-dimensional imagery. If development proceeds at a similar pace, it is possible we will see a return of 3D technology in a much more modern form in the coming years.
