Grand Theft Auto V has remained one of the world's most popular games for years, and Rockstar regularly continues to support the title on new platforms. The company has just released official information about a free update for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S users. Although most players can expect free access to the enhanced version, one important exception has emerged. It applies to owners of physical copies of the game on Microsoft's older consoles. The decision has caused considerable uproar in the community and may disappoint some fans of the series.
Xbox One disc owners will not receive a free upgrade
Rockstar has confirmed that users who own the digital version of GTA V on Xbox One will be able to move to the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S edition at no additional cost. The situation is different, however, for people who bought the game on physical media. According to the company, disc owners will not be able to take advantage of a free upgrade path. The firm explains this by limitations of the Microsoft platform. In practice, this means players who own the boxed version of the game on Xbox One will not gain access to the new version without repurchasing the title. For many users this may come as a big surprise, especially since similar solutions have already been used for other games on the market. The decision applies only to physical releases and does not include digital copies purchased through the Xbox Store. Rockstar did not disclose detailed technical reasons behind this approach. The publisher limited itself to a brief statement pointing to platform-related limitations. The gaming community quickly began discussing the situation, noting differences between the Sony and Microsoft ecosystems. For many people this may be one of the rare cases where owning a physical copy proves less advantageous than the digital version.
On PlayStation the situation looks much more favorable
Players using Sony consoles received much better news. Rockstar confirmed that both owners of digital and physical copies of GTA 5 on PlayStation 4 will be able to upgrade to the PlayStation 5 edition for free. For physical copies, all that’s required is inserting the original disc into the console’s drive when launching the game. This mechanism is used to verify ownership of the correct version of the product. That way users don’t lose access to the upgraded edition regardless of how they bought the game. The difference between platforms is therefore very clear and may raise questions about the reasons for this state of affairs. Rockstar stresses, however, that the procedures were prepared according to the capabilities offered by each system. The latest FAQ update published by the company describes the entire migration process for players in detail. Those eligible for the free upgrade can download the new version directly from the appropriate platform’s digital store. On PlayStation the process remains simple whether the user has a digital or physical version. For the Xbox community, however, the situation is much more complicated. Everything suggests that some players will have to accept the need to repurchase the game if they want to take advantage of the upgrades available on current-generation consoles.
Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the free GTA 5 update will not be available to owners of physical copies on Xbox One. Only users who own the digital version of the game will be able to get it. On PlayStation 5 the situation is more favorable, because both disc owners and digital-version owners will receive access to the enhanced edition at no extra cost.
