RGB Mini LED TVs offer impressive picture quality, but their prices remain high. That could change. Global Technology has started work on a new RGB BAR backlight module that should significantly simplify TV design. The manufacturer says it will reduce the number of driver ICs by up to two-thirds!
The new solution uses Time Sharing Operating (TSO) technology, i.e., time multiplexing. In practice, this means a single 12-channel controller can drive several LEDs sequentially, instead of requiring separate controllers for each one. According to Global Technology, the number of control chips can thus be reduced by as much as 67%. Additionally, the simplified wiring allows the use of cheaper, single-layer printed circuit boards.
Cheaper RGB Mini LED TVs by 2027?
RGB LED technology uses separate red, green, and blue backlight LEDs. That allows TVs to offer a wider color gamut than traditional LCD designs with a single-color backlight. However, the larger number of control elements makes their production more complex and expensive. RGB BAR is intended to help solve this problem. The company plans to start mass production in 2027, and in the future wants to use the solution in monitors and automotive displays as well.
Does this mean cheaper RGB Mini LED TVs? Not necessarily right away. Lower production costs could, however, make it easier for manufacturers to introduce this technology into more affordable models.
