This is one of the biggest changes in the history of the entertainment industry. Paramount Skydance has officially completed the acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, creating a new media conglomerate called Skydance. It now owns some of the most popular film and TV franchises in the world, as well as the HBO Max and Paramount+ platforms. What does this mean for viewers?
The transaction was finalized on October 6, 2026, and its value, including debt, amounted to about $111 billion. The new giant now controls, among others, Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, HBO, DC Studios, Nickelodeon, CBS and CNN.
That means franchises such as Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Transformers and Batman and Superman are now under one roof. Skydance therefore has a huge library of productions, which could become one of its greatest assets in the competition with Netflix and Disney.
What’s next for HBO Max and Paramount+?
One of the most important questions remains the future of the streaming services. Skydance plans to eventually combine HBO Max and Paramount+ into a single platform, although a detailed timetable for the changes has not yet been announced. It is also unclear how the merger will affect SkyShowtime operating in Poland, which Paramount co-owns. The new company also intends to invest heavily in cinema. It has pledged to release at least 30 theatrical films a year for the first two years, and then a minimum of 32 per year.
For viewers, however, the key question remains whether merging such huge libraries will mean more convenient access to movies and series, or also higher subscription prices.
