Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC as a significantly expanded version of the arcade shooter Railbreak. Dead Drop Studios' game takes players to the zombie-infested town of Cypress Ridge and emphasizes a classic auto-scrolling camera and nonstop combat. The new version features, among other things, 18 playable characters, additional modes, improved visuals, and two-player co-op. The developers also prepared game modes featuring dinosaurs and special effects that change the rules during subsequent runs. Railbreak DX can also be played via Xbox Cloud Gaming without downloading the game.
Zombies, 18 playable characters and lots of shooting
Railbreak DX preserves the distinctive formula of classic arcade-style on-rails shooters. The player doesn't directly control character movement, as the camera automatically guides them through sections of the city. Instead, reflexes, accuracy and quick reactions to appearing enemies are what matter most. In the main story mode you can play as Detective Lydia Daniels or the mercenary Hank. The story takes place in Cypress Ridge during a zombie apocalypse. While traversing the city you can destroy elements of the environment and find useful items. Only the story mode lets you pick up special weapons placed in certain locations. One example is a magnum hidden on a bench in the park in Act IV. The developers also hint at other unusual weapons, including an SMG that uses plasma. Railbreak DX includes a total of 18 playable survivors, while the original version offered nine. Each character has their own loadout, damage stats, fire rate and distinctive traits. Michael can be a good choice for players prioritizing survival, because he is immune to Poison and Bleed effects. His drawback, however, is a very ammo-hungry shotgun, which can cause problems on higher difficulty levels. Rin works completely differently: her special pistol can freeze zombies, but the effectiveness of her attacks heavily depends on landing headshots.
Accuracy Is the Key to a High Score
Railbreak DX heavily rewards precise shooting, especially if a player wants to fight for the highest score. Headshots deal extra damage and grant bonus points. Aiming for limbs lets you sever parts of regular zombies and limit their ability to attack. Grenades are useful for bigger problems but give few points, so it's better to treat them as a last-resort option. You also can't shoot random civilians appearing on the route without consequences. Hitting an innocent resident causes a severe penalty in the form of health loss. The exception is when a civilian is accidentally hit while using a screen-clearing grenade or by the explosion of a special infected enemy. The developers also encourage quickly eliminating certain monsters, such as Boom Boom or Kunoichi. Defeating them can trigger an explosion that lets you deal with a larger group of enemies. Besides the classic story mode, a Score Attack focused on getting the highest possible score has been prepared. There is also Onslaught, in which difficulty steadily rises until the player is ultimately defeated. Glitch Gauntlet uses roguelike elements and introduces unpredictable effects that change the flow of gameplay. A training mode is also available, allowing you to test characters without health limits. The game can be played solo or with a second player thanks to optional two-player co-op.
Railbreak DX is now available on Xbox Series X|S and PC for $24.99. The game features 18 characters, six story campaigns, Score Attack, Onslaught and Glitch Gauntlet modes, and two-player co-op. New additions also include dinosaurs from DINOBREAK, the ability to combine them with zombies, improved Unreal Engine 5 visuals, and ray tracing. The original Railbreak will be removed from direct sale in September 2026, and DX is intended to be the game's long-term supported version.
