Sony announced tests for a new PS5 system update, but it wasn't the list of fixes that caught players' attention the most. Among the new features was a "Power Saver for Games" mode, which – at first glance – is supposed to reduce power consumption while gaming. The problem is that a nearly identical feature appeared a month ago in leaks about the portable PS6. And it is this coincidence that has raised a wave of suspicions among the gaming community.
“Power Saver for Games” sounds familiar. And it's no coincidence
Sony describes the new mode as part of its pursuit of “zero greenhouse gas emissions.” It sounds noble, but many gamers see something more in it. The mode limits game performance – reducing resolution, frame rate, and energy consumption – just as the operation of the PS6 Handheld was described. The new console is expected to allow playing PS5 titles in a simplified mode, which fits perfectly with the feature being tested today on the PS5. Journalists from The Verge also noted that this could be an attempt to prepare developers for a new standard of game operation across various hardware configurations.
PS6 Handheld not until 2027? Sony may be testing already today
Although Sony officially says nothing about a portable PS6, leaks suggest a release not sooner than in two years. This does not change the fact that the company may already be testing future solutions in the familiar PS5 environment. The "Power Saver for Games" mode looks like the first step towards a new generation – one that will work both on the big screen and in handheld version. Coincidence? Players have no illusions.
