Sony has officially confirmed that it will close the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PS Vita consoles. For many players, this means the definitive end of the ability to purchase digital games on those platforms. The decision closes a long chapter in PlayStation's history and reignites the debate about the future of digital game ownership. Sony says previously purchased titles will still be downloadable, but it hasn't specified how long that option will remain available. This is another step by Sony toward a fully digital ecosystem.
Sony ends support for PS3 and PS Vita stores
Sony announced that the PlayStation Store for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita will be closed, ending nearly two decades of operation for these platforms. For many players this means a definitive end to the ability to buy new games and digital add-ons on the older consoles. The company said the process of shutting down the stores will begin at the end of 2026 in selected regions. Then in July 2027 the closure will include all remaining countries. After that date new purchases will no longer be possible. Sony does, however, assure that previously purchased games will remain available for re-download. The company did not specify, however, how long the servers will be kept online. The lack of a specific date is causing concern among users with large digital libraries. In practice players do not know whether access to their purchases will be preserved for a few years or much longer. In an official statement Sony emphasized that the decision was not easy and results from the need to end support for very old platforms. The company also noted that the PS3 and PS Vita played an important role in PlayStation's history. Still, for many fans this is a symbolic end to one of Sony's most distinctive console generations.

At the same time, the debate over the future of digital ownership of games is gaining momentum again. More and more players are noting that buying a digital copy does not always guarantee access to it for many years. The upcoming store closures may become one of the most important examples of this market shift.
