Sony will end the era of physical game releases on its consoles. The company has officially confirmed that starting in 2028 all new titles will be sold exclusively as digital releases. That means boxed versions of new PlayStation games will become a thing of the past. The decision is part of a trend that has been underway for several years, moving away from optical media in favor of digital distribution. Sony goes all-in on digital game distribution
Sony announced that starting in January 2028 all new games released for PlayStation consoles will be available only in digital form. This means the end of physical discs for new titles. The company emphasizes that the decision will not affect games released before that date. Existing releases will still be available on discs and remain on sale. The change will apply only to new launches appearing after January 2028. Sony explains the decision by the growing popularity of digital purchases and changing player preferences. The company's data show that the share of digital sales has been steadily increasing year after year. In 2024 digital sales accounted for 76 percent and physical for 24 percent. A year later it was already 78 percent to 22 percent. In the first quarter of 2026 as many as 85 percent of all games sold were bought digitally. Sony believes this trend will only strengthen in the coming years. The manufacturer says it will continue to invest in the development of the PlayStation Store and services related to digital distribution. For the games market, this marks the definitive end of one of the most important eras in console history.
