Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun testing a new feature for PlayStation 5 that could bring the platform closer to solutions known from Steam. The company is working on a widget that shows the popularity of games and the number of active players.
PS5 gets a new community widget
A new feature has appeared in beta in the PlayStation Welcome Hub. The widget is designed to display, among other things, a list of the 10 most popular games of the week and a "Trending Now" section showcasing titles with increasing player activity.
Sony shows activity based on the weekly number of players and time spent in games. For now, the feature works more like a quick view of the popularity of specific titles rather than a full-fledged statistics system like SteamDB.
Sony may be inspired by Steam
For years, Valve Corporation's platform and Steam have offered public player statistics thanks to open APIs and services like Steam Charts and SteamDB. Sony apparently wants to partially implement similar solutions on PlayStation as well.
Such data is especially important for multiplayer gamers. It allows them to quickly check if a particular title still has an active community and whether it is worth investing time and money in online games.
The feature is still heavily limited
At this moment, the new widget remains in early beta version and is only available in selected countries. Sony does not yet allow browsing historical statistics for specific games or more detailed data on player counts. It is also unknown when the feature will be available to all PS5 users and how much it will change before the official release.
