Philips is preparing a major update to the AmbiScape system, which lets you extend the Ambilight effect from the TV to additional lamps in the room. In the first half of 2027 TP Vision plans to add support for Matter over Thread. The change is intended to expand AmbiScape’s compatibility with additional smart lighting devices. At the same time the manufacturer is considering increasing the current limit of four connected lamps. The new solution may also reduce latency between the TV and external lighting.
AmbiScape lets Ambilight extend to the entire room
AmbiScape is an expansion of the well-known Ambilight system used in Philips TVs. The feature was announced for 2026 and will be available on selected Philips Ambilight TV models. Its purpose is to wirelessly extend the TV’s colored lighting effect to additional lamps in the room. That way, colors generated by the TV can also be reproduced by smart light sources. The solution can work while watching movies and series, gaming, and listening to music. Currently AmbiScape supports connecting up to four lamps. This uses the Matter standard over Wi‑Fi. Compatibility includes, among others, E27 smart bulbs from Wiz, Nanoleaf, Hue and Ikea. That means users don’t have to limit themselves to a single lighting manufacturer. AmbiScape is intended to act as an additional layer of the Ambilight system, moving its effect beyond the TV’s enclosure. In practice, this can create a more developed lighting atmosphere across the entire living room. The current version, however, is limited both in the number of lamps and in the communication technology used. TP Vision plans to remove some of these limitations in the next generation of the solution.
Matter-over-Thread will expand the system’s capabilities
The most important change announced by TP Vision is adding Matter-over-Thread support. The manufacturer plans to obtain the necessary certification in the first half of 2027. The feature will initially appear on 2027 Philips Ambilight TVs. Later, Matter-over-Thread support will also be made available for compatible 2026 models. Thread is a communication protocol designed for smart home devices and uses less power than Wi‑Fi. The technology also uses a mesh network, so additional Thread devices can strengthen the whole system’s connection. For compatible lights, there will also be no need to use an extra Philips Hue hub. Matter-over-Thread should therefore expand the number of products that can be used with AmbiScape. TP Vision also announced it will analyze the possibility of raising the current four-light limit. At IFA there were reports of potential support for up to ten lights, but the manufacturer noted the final specification has not yet been decided. The new communication method may also reduce latency when synchronizing external lights with the TV’s picture and sound.
Philips plans to significantly expand AmbiScape's capabilities in 2027.
