Mini LED technology could soon become significantly less popular in laptops. According to the latest forecasts from Counterpoint Research, shipments of those panels are expected to fall by as much as 75% over the next two years. At the same time, OLED is expected to gain ground, and Apple also plans to back it.

OLED is displacing Mini LED in laptops

Counterpoint Research analysts predict that global shipments of Mini LED panels for laptops will fall by 38% in 2026, and then by a further 60% in 2027. That means that in two years their number could be just one quarter of the 2025 level.

The situation for OLED is completely different. Shipments of those panels are expected to rise by 50% in 2026 and by another 24% in 2027. Meanwhile, the overall laptop display market is expected to shrink by about 3% this year.

Apple may accelerate the shift

One of the main reasons for OLEDs' growing popularity is Apple's planned switch to the technology in the next-generation MacBook Pros. According to reports, Samsung Display will be responsible for the initial panel deliveries and has started a new 8.6-generation OLED production line.

OLED primarily offers perfect blacks, high contrast, and the ability to build thinner displays without a separate backlight. Increasingly efficient manufacturing methods are also expected to lower panel costs.

However, this does not mean the end of Mini LED technology. The projections concern the laptop market, while in TVs Mini LED still remains an important alternative to OLED.
