Metro 2039 is meant to be a return to the series’ most iconic elements, but the developers also want to significantly expand its formula. 4A Games once again brings players into the dark world of the Moscow metro, where survival will demand far more than accurate shooting. The game will include plenty of exploration, stealth, and combat, and the developers placed great emphasis on a detailed depiction of the world. They showed roughly two hours of gameplay that revealed, among other things, demanding encounters, limited resources, and strong horror elements. If the full title maintains the level of the shown segment, series fans could get one of the most atmospheric Metro installments yet.

Metro 2039 returns to the series' roots but aims to be even more demanding

Metro 2039 is set to be the next major entry in 4A Games’ post-apocalyptic series, which this time returns players to Moscow. The story takes place in a world devastated by nuclear war, where survivors have spent years trying to survive in the underground metro system. The main character returns to a place he previously tried to avoid. Once there, it turns out the region is under the control of Hunter, who has created his own fear-based regime. Players will have to traverse both the underground tunnels and the ruined surface of Moscow. 4A Games has prepared gameplay focused on survival, stealth, and careful decision-making. During the presentation it was possible to see about two hours of gameplay. Even that segment showed the developers do not intend to hold the player's hand. Metro 2039 uses many in-game elements instead of a traditional HUD. Information about supplies, the map, or the remaining time on the gas mask filter is presented physically. Players must, among other things, open their backpack to craft ammunition and filters, and the time left before the filter needs replacing can be checked on the watch. Even saving the game has been tied to an in-world object, making the gameplay more immersive.

The developers want the player to fear every encounter

A strong sense of danger is meant to play a big role in Metro 2039, because combat won't always be the best option. During playtests the player quickly learned that mindlessly taking out enemies can end very badly. On the surface you'll encounter, among others, huge nosalisy that can attack in large groups. Sometimes it's far wiser to bypass enemies and remain unnoticed. Stealth is meant to be one of the most important gameplay elements, especially when infiltrating enemy bases. The developers allow you to observe enemy behavior and plan your next moves before launching an attack. If the situation gets out of hand, you can of course switch to direct combat. Another key element is the limited amount of resources, which must be used wisely. The crafting system has been simplified to basic materials, including metal and chemicals. The game will also include more specialized resources for weapon modification. There will also be elements of horror and paranormal phenomena. One of the showcased sequences led the player through a haunted school full of child ghosts and puzzles involving masks and candles. Everything indicates that Metro 2039 will try to combine a heavy survival atmosphere with more classic action and moments of outright horror.

Metro 2039 promises to be an ambitious return to the world of the Moscow Metro. 4A Games is focusing on a detailed environment, a pared down interface and mechanics designed to enhance the sense of physical presence in the game world. Combat will be important, but stealth, conserving resources and avoiding unnecessary confrontations will be just as important. The game will also feature more direct horror elements and paranormal events. Metro 2039 will arrive on Xbox Series X|S and PC in February 2027.
