LG is making a stronger move into the wireless audio segment, and it's doing so in collaboration with Dolby. The new Dolby Atmos FlexConnect system is meant to be more than just another soundbar; it's an attempt to completely change the approach to sound in the living room. Instead of one device under the TV, users receive a set of speakers that can be placed practically anywhere, and the system will automatically adapt the sound to the space.
Sound without wires and without setup limitations
The greatest advantage of FlexConnect is its flexibility. Speakers can be arranged in various configurations in the front, back, with or without a subwoofer, and the system automatically calibrates the sound based on their placement. Interestingly, the TV can serve as the center channel, which further simplifies the entire setup. The technology is directly integrated into the new LG OLED TVs from 2025 and 2026, meaning that a soundbar will not always be needed as the "command center." The system supports up to four speakers and a subwoofer, and its greatest strength is its ability to maintain a spatial effect even with unusual equipment setups. This is a huge change for people who do not have ideal conditions for a traditional home theater.
Great potential but also limitations
While the first impressions are positive, the system is not without flaws. The biggest issue is its closed nature; LG speakers do not work with televisions from other brands. This means that the user is practically "locked" into one ecosystem, which can be a significant downside. There are also questions about latency in games and the full utilization of Dolby Atmos technology in real-time. In movies, the problem is less noticeable, as the system can synchronize the image and sound, but in games, it may look different. Nevertheless, FlexConnect has enormous potential, especially as an alternative to systems like Sonos, which have dominated the wireless audio segment for years.
FlexConnect shows that the future of home audio can be wireless and much more flexible than today, but it all depends on whether LG opens its system to a wider market.
