Xbox celebrates its 25th anniversary and is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in its history. The brand's new CEO, Asha Sharma, has outlined a vision that goes far beyond traditional consoles and games. Microsoft wants to grow Xbox into a broad entertainment brand, focusing on both new gaming titles and films and TV series based on its biggest franchises.
Xbox wants to be more than a game maker
According to Asha Sharma, the future of entertainment belongs to games. The head of Xbox believes younger generations are increasingly choosing interactive experiences over traditional forms of screen time. For that reason, the company plans to develop an ecosystem that will be available to more players and creators. At the same time, Xbox is facing challenges tied to rising hardware costs and shifts across the tech industry. Company leaders have acknowledged that organizational changes and a new growth strategy are necessary.
New Movies and Series Are Being Made Based on Xbox Games
After the success of the Minecraft movie and the Fallout TV series, Microsoft is ramping up investments in adaptations of its franchises. More than a dozen film and TV projects based on Xbox-owned games are currently in development. Confirmed projects include a live-action Gears of War movie that will tell the origin story of Delta Squad as they battle the Locust Horde. Work is also underway on a Sea of Thieves movie. Additional projects tied to the Minecraft, Fallout, and Wolfenstein franchises are also planned.
Despite growth in its film segment, Microsoft emphasizes that games remain the priority. Among the most important upcoming releases are the new Fable, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, Halo: Campaign Evolved, and the long-awaited The Elder Scrolls VI. The company is also working on a mysterious horror, OD, from Hideo Kojima. Xbox's new strategy involves creating a more open ecosystem designed to attract both players and creators of new experiences. Microsoft is clearly signaling that it intends to compete not only in the games market but also to secure a position as one of the biggest players in the wider entertainment industry.
