LG Display, one of the key manufacturers of OLED panels for TVs and monitors, has announced the largest rebranding of its OLED technology since its debut over 13 years ago. The company is now dividing its panels into two main lines – Tandem WOLED and Tandem OLED. The changes were announced just before the CES 2026 in Las Vegas, where LG Display will showcase the next generations of OLED panels and reveal details of the technology planned for next year. Notably, the manufacturer is already building anticipation by adding preliminary information about OLED panels for 2026 to its announcements.
Tandem WOLED – OLED panels for TVs and monitors
Large OLED panels used in TVs and PC monitors will now operate under the name Tandem WOLED. This technology, commonly referred to by users as WOLED, is responsible for the majority of OLED TVs available on the market today.
“The name Tandem is meant to emphasize the key advantages of LG Display's OLED technology – higher durability, longer lifespan, greater brightness, and lower energy consumption, achieved through the laminated structure of OLED” – explains LG Display. Tandem WOLED panels are used in TVs from brands such as LG Electronics, Sony, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung, Hisense, Bang & Olufsen, Loewe, and Grundig.
It is worth adding that the most advanced panels from 2025 were previously referred to as Primary RGB Tandem OLED, while older generations operated under the name OLED EX.
“For the first time in the industry, we added the letter W, symbolizing the white light source, which is a unique feature of LG Display OLED technology, and the name Tandem, referring to the layered structure of the independent R, G, and B elements” – emphasizes the manufacturer.
Tandem OLED – medium and small diagonals
The second line in the new division is Tandem OLED, meaning panels designed for laptops, tablets, mobile devices, and automotive systems.
“The Tandem OLED brand for small and medium panels reflects the technology based on two RGB layers, hence the term Tandem” – informs LG Display. These panels are used by Apple, LG Electronics, Asus, Acer, and other consumer electronics manufacturers. LG Display is gradually transitioning the monitor segment to Tandem OLED technology – one of the first examples is an extremely fast panel with a refresh rate of 540 Hz, and eventually even 720 Hz.
Tandem WOLED in 2026 - More Brightness and Higher Resolution
In a separate video material obtained by TFTCentral, LG Display announced new OLED panels for 2026 and the development of Primary RGB Tandem 2.0 technology. This is expected to offer even higher brightness than the solutions from 2025, which made their way into LG G5 and Panasonic Z95B televisions, as well as selected 27-inch gaming monitors. Among the announced innovations were:
curved 39-inch Tandem WOLED monitor with an ultrawide resolution of 5120x2160,
27-inch Tandem WOLED monitor with high PPI, tentatively marked as 27U, which almost certainly means a 4K resolution.
This second panel is set to directly compete with the 27-inch 4K QD-OLED monitor from Samsung Display.
OLED competition enters a new phase
Rebranding LG Display is not just a change of names, but also a clear signal to the market. OLED technology is entering a new phase of competition – on one side with QD-OLED from Samsung Display, and on the other with the upcoming RGB OLED from TCL. Details regarding the Tandem WOLED and Tandem OLED panels for 2026 will be officially presented during CES 2026 in early January.
