Lexar used the IFA 2026 trade show to unveil the new Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD. The device has a card form factor and, according to the manufacturer, is the world’s thinnest portable SSD. At its thickest point the enclosure measures about 3.8 mm, tapering to just 1 mm at the edge. The drive is aimed at people who record and edit footage directly on mobile devices. The manufacturer is also emphasizing a magnetic mounting solution designed to reduce cable clutter.
Muse was designed primarily with mobile devices in mind
The Lexar Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD uses a minimalist metal enclosure made from a single piece of material. Thanks to the unibody construction, the manufacturer reduced the number of seams and visible elements on the device’s surface. Inside is a specially designed, very thin PCB and high-density NAND flash. This solution allowed Lexar to maximize available space without sacrificing the stated performance. The enclosure is about 3.8 mm thick at its thickest point. At the very edge, the device measures just 1 mm. One of the most interesting elements is a magnetic data connection that Lexar calls PogoPin. You can connect the included SnapLink Magnetic Cable to the drive; it uses a spring-loaded pin interface. N52 neodymium magnets are used both in the connector and in the magnetic case. They are intended to ensure precise alignment of the drive and a secure attachment. The case also acts as a holder and lets you attach the SSD to the back of compatible iPhone models that support MagSafe. That way the whole setup takes up little space when recording footage or working on the go. Lexar positions the Muse primarily for people who need additional storage while creating content on the move.
Over 1 GB/s and ProRes 4K recording at 120 fps
In terms of performance, Muse is said to offer read speeds of up to 1050 MB/s. The maximum advertised write speed is 1000 MB/s. The drive is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Mac computers and other devices equipped with USB-C. Particularly interesting is the ability to directly record Apple ProRes 4K footage at up to 120 fps on compatible iPhone models. The external SSD can therefore serve as extra space when recording large video files. Muse is also intended for fast data transfer, project storage and backups. The manufacturer also foresees using the drive as additional storage for mobile devices. Its compact size is meant to make it easy to use while traveling and working away from home. The magnetic system, in turn, is designed to reduce the problem of a tangled cable when using a phone. Lexar emphasizes that Muse is part of the company's broader strategy related to mobile data storage and solutions for creators. The IFA 2026 presentation also includes memory technologies aimed at AI applications and B2B solutions. The Muse Ultra-Slim Portable SSD is expected to go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2026. Initially it will be available in two capacities: 512 GB and 1 TB. Lexar has not yet announced prices for the new drives.
