After years of waiting, PlayStation gamers may finally see the return of two of the most acclaimed Call of Duty entries. Treyarch has confirmed that the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 will receive new versions being developed by studio Iron Galaxy. The titles, which for years were mainly available on older consoles, are finally set to appear on Sony's current hardware. For many fans, this will be a chance to relive one of the series' best eras. Everything suggests the release could happen as early as July.
Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are coming to newer PlayStation consoles after years
The original Call of Duty: Black Ops debuted in 2010, while Black Ops 2 arrived two years later. Both games quickly gained huge popularity thanks to expansive single-player campaigns, polished multiplayer, and the cult Zombies mode. Despite the years that have passed, many still consider them some of the best entries in the franchise. The problem, however, was that PlayStation players couldn't run these titles on newer console generations. While Xbox users have long benefited from backward compatibility, PlayStation owners were left without a similar option. Now that's set to change. According to available information, the games are being prepared as native PlayStation 4 versions that will also run on PlayStation 5 thanks to backward compatibility. For many, this will be the first chance to play these titles on modern hardware. It won't be a full remaster, though. The developers aren't promising a major graphical overhaul or significant gameplay changes. The project's primary goal is to preserve the original experience. As a result, players will get virtually the same content they remember from years ago. At the same time, the new release should make it easier to access the classic entries in the series.
The campaign, multiplayer, and the iconic Zombies mode are back
The biggest draw for many players may be the return of all the key game modes. Treyarch has confirmed that the new versions will include the full single-player campaign, multiplayer, and the community-favorite Zombies mode. That means players won't get stripped-down editions but the complete experience known from the original releases. The multiplayer aspect in particular is generating a lot of excitement. It looks likely that refreshed online servers will be launched with the new versions. That could mean more stable connections and better online gameplay than the older releases available on previous console generations. For veterans, it's a chance to return to legendary maps and relive Call of Duty's golden era. Younger players, meanwhile, will be able to see why Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are still so highly regarded by the community. There are also reports of additional improvements related to game localization. The new releases are said to support languages that weren't available in the original versions. However, don't expect major changes to the content itself. This is primarily an attempt to preserve the series' classic entries and make them available to new audiences. If all goes according to plan, July could be an especially interesting month for Call of Duty fans on PlayStation.
